A Nashua resident pleaded guilty in federal court to making a false statement when purchasing a firearm, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Erin Creegan. Tanya Hunter, 40, admitted to acquiring a gun on December 20, 2023, from a federally licensed dealer in Hudson, New Hampshire, on behalf of a man from Massachusetts.

Court documents and statements indicate that Hunter falsely claimed on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) purchase form that she was the actual buyer or transferee of the firearm. The weapon was later found at a crime scene in Massachusetts.

The offense carries potential penalties including up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and fines up to $250,000. Sentencing is scheduled for May 11, 2026. Sentences are determined by a federal district court judge based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives led the investigation. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney John W. Howard is prosecuting the case.
